Registered Nurse (RN)

Department: Homeless Triage Center-HTAT
Location: Honolulu, HI

The Institute for Human Services (IHS) is Hawaii's most comprehensive human services agency dedicated to ending and preventing homelessness. For over 45 years, we've been at the forefront of creating tailored solutions for those in crisis, offering a continuum of care that includes emergency shelters, housing programs, health services, employment assistance, and outreach.

The Registered Nurse works in partnership with programs internal to IHS including but not limited to the outreach teams and the IHS Health Services Clinics, as well as with other health services providers in the community. This position provides triage, nursing and urgent medical care to targeted homeless individuals who may be in crisis or who have been identified as needing medical, detox, psychiatric, and social services.

Compensation:

Starting from $80,000 annually, actual pay commensurate with experience.

Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrate excellent customer service consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.
  2. Provide direct care, initial first aid, and, if needed, other nursing services to unsheltered/sheltered homeless.
  3. Provide referrals and work proactively with operations staff of IHS in advance of homeless individuals entering IHS shelters to ensure successful placement, service, linkage and supports as appropriate.
  4. Work in collaboration with physicians, psychiatrists and other IHS staff to ensure identification of mental health, medical needs, diagnoses and linkage to access medications and medication appointments to support medication adherence and success for homeless individuals.
  5. Assist case managers in communicating with MDs, including psychiatrists regarding any healthcare issues including, but not limited to the management of chronic illness, medication management, diagnostic procedures, need for health education.
  6. Assist with and/or provide guest health education regarding medical and mental health concerns frequently encountered with persons served.
  7. Input and maintain accurate documentation related to the provision of services; Regularly document per all of the programs' requirements.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  1. Working knowledge of healthcare and medical needs of homeless and/or disenfranchised populations.
  2. Possess excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and multi-tasking skills.
  3. Able to perform nursing assessments, develop appropriate formulations, interventions and service plans that assist individuals with complex problems and document accurately in the systems of record.
  4. Current BLS or CPR certification.
  5. Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to mission.
  6. Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.

Required Education and Experience:

  1. Associates Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
  2. Must be licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Hawaii.
  3. Have at least 1- 2 years of work experience in nursing or working in community health.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Generally 12 hour shifts with some varying shift hours based on classification. Hours and days may vary based on the needs of the organization.
